ENVIRONMENTAL SUMMARY
Parc Del Forum is located 7.5 km / 5 miles from central Barcelona. There are multiple train, bus, night bus, and tramway stops within easy walking distance to the venue.
Our transportation to this gig was greatly complicated by the current political tension at the French / Spanish border regarding fuel prices. The border closed the afternoon of our second Paris show. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/10/world/europe/10fuel.html?ref=world
We were unable to drive across the border with our personnel or our gear as originally scheduled. Rail tickets were booked and alternate freight schedules arranged, only to have the ports and rail lines into Spain closed later that afternoon as well. Considering the time it takes to setup the stage, our choice was to fly or to cancel the show in Barcelona. The decision was made to make sure that the show was performed if at all possible. We flew in the instruments necessary to perform and closely monitored the border situation as it developed. The police ultimately reopened the borders as protests continued and we were able to pass through with our remaining gear in time for the show.
Parking:
Though some used the built-in bicycle parking or drove scooters, the vast majority of audience members used public transportation. There was no car park area affiliated with the festival.
Energy:
The temporary festival site was setup on a wide expanse of concrete partially covered by Europe's largest urban array of solar panels. The panels provide electricity for the city but there was no infrastructre on site to support the electrical service needs of a show. B100 biodiesel-powered generators provided all venue power and the promoters were asked to supply only 100% recycled waste oil biodiesel, pending certification.
Recycling:
Recycling stations were setup for glass, paper, plastic and aluminum throughout backstage and behind the audience bar area for staff use. Plastic and cardboard recycling containers were made available through out the audience area.
Catering:
Because of the cargo situation, we were unable to setup our own catering for the show. Most meals were eaten in local restaurants and any take away containers were recycled.
Concessions:
The audience were given reusable plastic cups with a 1€ deposit upon return. The audience were also encouraged to collect recyclables in return for free water.
Other green concerns:
There was a severe lack of waste receptacles leading from the road to the venue entrance. Because that particular land is controlled by the city and not the venue, the promoter was unable to address the situation.
A special thanks to Susanna Caralt and all at Sinnamon.
