ENVIRONMENTAL SUMMARY
The amphitheatre is located 71 miles / 115 km from downtown Miami, 47 miles / 75 km from downtown Ft. Lauderdale, and 11 miles / 17 km from downtown West Palm Beach. The audience transportation is 100% car with no public transportation options. Florida is generally behind on recycling -- they have only just implemented residential recycling programs and they do not offer municipal recycling programs for large businesses. [source: venue]
Carpooling:
The venue marked a drastic reduction in the number of cars for our show vs. other shows with the same number of tickets sold. They tallied 2.9 people per car instead of their usual 2.35 people... a 19% reduction in total cars.
It became immediately apparent that the couple hundred VIP carpooling spots were not going to be enough to meet demand, so the venue kindly opened up more than 600 spots for carpoolers. This show was their first attempt at setting up a separate carpooling lot and there was some confusion amongst the parking attendants regarding the number of available spots. The cars were also being sorted too late within the entry process to route the cars effectively. We will attempt to address these issues at future shows.
Renewable Energy:
Florida Power & Light sells green tariffs for renewable energy which we are working with the venue to purchase for our show.
Recycling:
Though the city does not offer municipal recycling on such a commercial scale, the venue agreed to hire Solid Waste Authority to collect and recycle all applicable waste from our show (backstage and throughout the audience area), plus the same for all other shows this summer.
Catering:
Caterers provided washable plates, cutlery, and napkins for all meals. If disposable containers were absolutely necessary, we provided biodegradable sugarcase-based takeaway containers and starch-based utensils as an alternative to plastics. Caterers collected all their compostable kitchen scraps for use by the venue's groundskeeping department.
Concessions:
The venue introduced us to the new corn-based PLA plastic concessions cups that will be used as part of their own environmental campaign. They also put together a cup collection program to encourage fans to collect concessions cups for proper disposal. More than 1400 cups were collected.
Other green initiatives:
The venue is in the process of switching over to all high efficiency light bulbs, replacing old ones as they burn out. Taps have tap aerators and most shower heads are low flow. Office paper, toilet paper, and hand towels are made of recycled stock.
A special thanks to Brandon Barry, Sarah Barnes, and Neil Jacobsen of LiveNation Floria plus all the venue staff at the Cruzan Amphitheatre for their enthusiastic help. Thanks also to Capers Catering for piloting our composting program.
